San Francisco Giants Re-Sign Aubrey Huff
The San Francisco Giants re-signed left-handed swinger Aubrey Huff last week to a two-year contract worth $22 million with a buy-out option for 2013 of $2 million or a club option for $10 million. So, he’ll make $10 million for both 2011 and 2012.
After having a several struggles during the 2009 MLB season, the Giants still inked the first baseman/outfielder to a one-year deal worth $3 million this past January before the 2010 season started hoping that he would return to the player that he was in 2008. Huff definitely improved and showed that he could improve even more throughout the season.
The Giants made it to the 2010 World Series this year and definitely made it there with the help of 33-year-old Huff, whose appearance was his first in his 11-year stint in the Major Leagues. The Giants knew that Huff was a good one for their bullpen and started their off-season off right by wasting no time to re-sign him so that he can help the team make it to the Fall Classic again next year in 2011. Definitely a wise choice on the Giants end as Huff was a major factor in the team’s offense this season.
Huff was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fifth round of the 1998 MLB Draft and is going into his 12th year in the Major Leagues. Huff played in 157 total games with San Francisco this year. He had a total of 569 at-bats while recording 26 home runs, 86 runs batted in, 100 total runs scored and 7 stolen bases. He finished the season with a batting average of .290 and a slugging percentage of .506 – not quite what he was in 2008 when he had a batting average of .304 and a slugging percentage of .552 but damn near it. Close enough if you ask me!
For the postseason, Huff played in 15 games scoring 7 runs, hitting 15 homers, achieving 8 runs batted in all with a batting average of .268 and a slugging percentage of .357.
This contract begins Huff’s second and third year with the Giants after being with Tampa Bay for nearly 7 seasons, Houston for one season (not even a whole season), Baltimore for two seasons and then lastly to Detroit for a season before coming to the San Francisco Giants.
