Tampa Bay Rays Defeat Texas Rangers to Avoid Playoff Elimination; New York Yankees Sweep Minnesota Twins to Advance in the ALCS
Who had their eye on the Minnesota Twins? Well, if you did – that era is over. Saturday night, the Twins got embarrassingly buried by the New York Yankees in a game that ended in the Yankees favor of 6-1 after Phil Hughes pitched a total of seven shutout innings. The three-game sweep of the Twins allows the Yankees to head into the American League Championship series.
The New York Yankees will be trying to score their second consecutive World Series title this year. The loss for the Twins makes their 12th consecutive game defeat in the postseason, which is comes in second for the longest losing streak in the postseason in the league’s history. Looking to next year, however, unless they pick up some momentum they may add to that and they only need a single loss to tie with the first place Boston Red Sox with 13 defeats consecutively.
The Yankees will now continue in the AL Championship Series and will next face the winner of the Texas Rangers and Tampa Bay game series on Friday, which is heading into a fourth game. The Rays were able to score on the Rangers late in the game boosting the score, a score that the Rangers were unable to match or exceed before the bottom of the ninth inning. The Rays beat the Rangers Saturday night with a final score of 6-3 and avoided being eliminated early on. The Rangers just need one more win to proceed into the next round.
