Top Winter Transfers in English Premier League

The winter transfer window closed just a few short days ago.  This winter transfer window was the last chance team managers had to bolster their squads. Many of the movers switched teams for free while others went on loan.  There wasn’t a lot of big spending, especially in the UK, since spending was a bit scarce there. Most weren’t looking to affect their finances negatively in the search of new players so they preferred finding bargains and loan agreements. However, a few teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea and Aston Villa were fully prepared to spend as much money as needed to secure a winning team.

And, for two players – Andy Carroll and Fernando Torres, £35 million and £50 million respectively were paid out to acquire these two players who have in the past had a strong reputation and future playing potential. Whether or not they were worth that much money will remain to be seen in the next few years.

Fernando Torres

Known as a world-class player, Fernando Torres made his switch between two of the most respective teams in the league and went to Chelsea from Liverpool for a whopping £50 million. There had been speculation for weeks that this trade was in the talks, but Liverpool had turned away bids and turned down the talks persistently insisting that the Spaniard was not for sale. He is 26 years old so he has a lot of time left in his career and will hopefully strengthen his playing after being a bit out of it. There is potentially here, but in a few years, we’ll see if Chelsea came out on top after shelling such a large amount on a player.

Andy Carroll

After leaving Newcastle United and joining Liverpool for £35 million, Andy Carroll is now the most expensive British player in football history. You can bet that some of that money used to purchase Carroll was from the sale of Torres, but that is beside the point. This role may prove to be difficult for the young 22-year-old player as he must live up to being the highest paid English player. He is strong and has shown that in the Premier League so there’s really no doubt that he can thrive with Liverpool in the coming years – but at his price tag, he better be better than expected.

David Luiz

Chelsea purchased David Luiz for £21 million and will find a battle amongst himself to gain a starting position with his new club, especially when a key player of Chelsea’s – Alex – gains his strength back and is ready to jump back out on the field. Regardless, Luiz is a strong-willed and energetic player and he has shown us all that during his time at Benfica. He is only 23 years old so he has time to prove himself with his new team. He is likely to move up the ladder quickly with Chelsea and be a key asset to the team for years to come.

Luis Suarez

Last but not least in this article of top winter transfers is Luis Suarez who was acquired by Liverpool for £23 million. This 24-year-old does not have any experience in the Premier League so it is likely that it will take a few months for him to find himself a place to call “home” despite being with a prestigious club because he’ll have to alter his playing styles to match his team and the league. Despite that, though, his track record proves that he will be successful with Liverpool as in 159 appearances with Ajax, he scored 111 goals. He also showed his abilities during the World Cup, helping his team to arrive at the semi-finals.
