Burress Facing Prison Time
Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will soon be facing some time in prison. He had a loaded .40-caliber pistol that was in his pocket. It was loaded and he wasn’t using any safety features on the gun. His gun didn’t fit properly in his pants, and while he was walking, it began to slowly fall down. Burress didn’t feel it sliding or else he would have done something about it.
Seconds later the gun fired because he wasn’t paying attention, which caused him to miss a step. When the gun fired, the bullet hit his leg. He suffered through waves of fear because he was not sure whether he would live or die after the bullet hit him and he saw the blood going down his leg. Burress said that if someone else had been hurt by his gun that things would have been really bad for him, but thankfully, he was the only one that got hurt, and it only fired once. Burress claims that he knew nothing about the fact that New York City had a 3 1/2 year mandatory law which states that anyone caught with an unlicensed gun will go to jail for 3 1/2 years. That shocked him. He feels stupid for bringing this punishment on himself, which may very well end his professional football career. Thankfully for Burress, they are only making his sentence a two-year term. He is hoping that while he is in prison, he will be able to play some sports with the other inmates. This will help keep him in shape for when he gets out.
Another thing that Burress is regretting is that he will be separated from his wife, and she is expecting a baby girl to be born on Thanksgiving Day. He won’t be able to experience the special moment or be there to hold his wife’s hand while she is giving birth. He is already feeling down about having to be separated from her and misses her already. He will also be separated from his son, and he has never been separated from his son before either.
Burress said that he got a gun because he was scared and nervous and felt that he should have it for safety reasons. One day, he was walking with his teammate Antonio Pierce, and he was held at gunpoint. The experience was a very dramatic and life changing one for Burress. He felt violated because of being held at gunpoint. If only he would have known about the law, he would have registered the gun.
Burress was about to put the gun away when they arrived at the club but he decided not to because of what happened to him. If he would have listened to what his gut was saying, he wouldn’t be in the situation that he is in.
All of his fans are saddened that he won’t be playing for the next couple of years. He was one of the reasons the Giants won the Super Bowl when they played the New England Patriots.
Burress hopes that when he is released from prison, the NFL will hire him again, because he will be ready to play. He loves playing football and it shows.
