Kevin Painter was quoted in the newspapers saying how frustrated the other players are at how Phil “The Power” Taylor continues to completely dominate Darts as no players can match Phil’s scoring and finishing power. It is, of course, up to the players themselves to raise their game to compete with Phil. No-one in the last fifteen years has quite managed it and this week at the Players Championship Phil is the man to beat. Using the sports betting odds provided by bwin, here are some tips for the first round of matches to be played tomorrow. You should consider an accumulator with more than five selections I feel to grab the combined value from the matches on offer.

Wes Newton 2/5 versus Peter Wright 17/10

Years ago Wes was touted as a future World Champion. Unfortunately for him he never quite progressed to that level but he is a good bet to beat Wright. 2/5 is short odds but this is reasonable for your accumulator.

Colin Osborne 18/25 versus Co Stompe 1/1

Stompe had a great run in the 2010 World Darts Championships losing to Mark Webster in the quarter finals. Osborne is one of the finest players on the tournament circuit but does not have the consistently good results in big tournaments that Stompe does. This is value at 1/1. Back Stompe and hope he performs.

Gary Anderson 2/5 versus Jelle Klaasen 17/10

Anderson is currently ranked 33 in the PDC rankings but has only been on the tour for one season. Klaasen won the BDO World Championships in 2006 as the youngest ever winner of the event but has never quite risen to the top of the PDC. Jelle is ranked at 22 in the world currently. Anderson should win this match but Klaasen, whose technique when working can be devastating could cause him problems. I will tip Anderson to win this match.

James Wade 1/2 versus Mervyn King 7/5

This is the tie of the round and could easily be a semi-final or final match up. Wade is world number three and for a time was the heir apparent to Taylor before Taylor stamped his authority on the game in 2009. Mervyn is hard working whilst Wade admits he does not practise much between tournaments. If you want to back King for the win then do so in a singles bet. Wade beat King in the final of the Premier league in 2009, so I will back him to beat King here in what could be a classic.

Ronnie Baxter 11/20 versus Mark Dudbridge 13/10

Baxter is the crowd’s favourite and is currently sixth in the world rankings. Dudbridge has a good reputation in Darts but Baxter is enjoying a renaissance in his career. Expect Baxter to win this match comfortably. 11/20 seems decent odds for me and possibly the sports bet of the round.

Backing all of the above selections in an accumulator bet wagering £10 would return a total of £91.14. Considering three of the matches I would consider bankers, we probably need Wade and Stompe mainly to win for us and the rest would normally win their matches. Enjoy watching the Darts and enjoy your sports betting in this event.
